Betaflight PID tuning: the complete step-by-step guide

Good tuning is an order, not luck. This guide walks the proven sequence — filters first, then P, D, I, yaw and feedforward — with realistic starting points for modern Betaflight (4.5/4.6).

01Step 0: clean build and defaults

Start mechanically clean (tight screws, good props, soft mount) and reset to defaults plus the matching preset (5-inch freestyle, 7-inch long-range, cinewhoop). Modern Betaflight defaults are the best starting point we have ever had.

02Step 1: filters first

Enable bidirectional DShot and the RPM filter, then the dynamic notch — before touching PIDs. Only once motor noise is cleanly removed can you safely raise D at all. Filters and PIDs interact: more noise limits D, more filtering limits P.

03Step 2: P, then D, then I

The master multiplier (0.5x–2.0x) scales all P/D gains; for many 5-inch freestyle builds the sweet spot is around 1.2–1.4x. By hand instead: raise P until oscillation appears in hard turns, then back to about 70%; raise D until overshoot/bounce is damped; touch I only a little (too much = slow waggle).

04Step 3: yaw, feedforward, verify

Tune yaw last (P around 40–60, D usually 0, FF around 100) and set feedforward for stick sharpness. Important: pull a log after each change and verify.
